Recommendations for Marine Science careers
Academia
Pursuing an academic career as a marine scientist will require a doctorate in any one of a number of fields including: biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, geology etc. The key to pursuing this career track as an undergraduate at Cal Poly is to get into a good graduate school, which will require good grades, the appropriate course work and some experience in the area of interest. Appropriate course work would include a strong background in the area of interest, a number of support courses in the other disciplines and a strong introduction to statistics and computer science. For example if you are planning on getting into a grad program in biology, support courses would include chemisty (through organic chemistry), a year of physics, a year of calculus, with courses in statistics and a working knowledge of computers and programming. It is also important to get experience and we suggest that you try to do this during the academic year as well as participate in summer opportunities.
